Sustainability of water resources

25.10.2017

This morning, our professor Olli Varis shared his knowledge on water resources and aspects of their sustainability on YLE Puhe (National Broadcasting Company). Together with Antti Rautavaara (Senior adviser, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland) he discussed they factors controlling water scarcity and the key approaches to water resources. Even though the effects may be local, even micro-scale, the network of factors are often global. Rautavaara introduced one example, the north-eastern part of China, one of the most dry regions globally. The water shortage and scarcity has motivated China to closely collaborate with African countries, thus strengthening Chinese food production and virtual water trade from Africa.

Prof. Varis introduced several key approaches to water resources, ecological, technical, and political approaches. Even though water resources can be talked with juxtaposition, Varis encourages to strengthen water diplomacy and collaboration across spatial scales.

Kestävät vesiresurssit

Tutkimusryhmämme johtaja, professori Olli Varis keskustelu Ulkoministeriön kehityspolitiikan neuvonantaja Antti Rautavaaran kanssa vesivarojen kestävyydestä YLE Puheella. Asiantuntijat pohtivat erilaisia vesikestävyyteen vaikuttavia tekijöitä ja tärkeimpiä näkökulmia teemaan. Varis korosti, että vaikka vesiturvallisuuden vaikutukset voivat esiintyä paikallistasolla, ilmiöön vaikuttavien tekijöiden verkosto on usein globaali. Rautavaara nosti esiin esimerkiksi Koillis-Kiinan, yhden maailman kuivimmista alueista.
