One of Aalto University’s goals is to educate doctors with relevant working skills required not only inside the academia but also in the industry. Successful education is a combination of the student’s contribution and high quality, persevering and systematic instruction. However, many doctoral students do not graduate in time. Our researchers Dr. Maija Taka, Prof. Matti Kummu, Dr. Marko Keskinen and Prof. Olli Varis share their thoughts about the current state and future prospects of Finnish doctoral education and water research in the newest Vesitalous-magazine.
Water and Development Research Group (WDRG) has for long been active in creating new methods for doctoral education, and for increasing the societal impact of research. Now, these methods are systematically being developed in a project funded by the Land and Water Technology Foundation (MVTT). An important goal of the project is to identify new and efficient ways of working, which have potential also within wider audiences, such as in the School of Engineering of Aalto University.
The principal idea behind developing doctoral education is to bring the doctoral dissertation into wider context: the process of doctoral studies is seen as a personal learning experience in which the dissertation holds only one share of the process. Moreover, the student is encouraged to develop her or his knowledge and skills in theory, methodology and working life in strong collaboration with research community, master’s students and potential employers.
Another goal of the project is to develop and strengthen Finnish water research in the international, professional and scientific communities. In these communities, high-quality research investigates the complex networks of natural resources, environmental challenges and their interconnections by incorporating the most modern methods available. The six doctoral students of the MVTT project are studying similar issues, with a wide range of topics varying from water governance, urbanization and food systems to water security and spatial modelling.
Finally, during the next four years, this project aims at changing the world into more sustainable direction by creating new methods, identifying new interconnections and by bridging the gap between science, planning and decision-making. Research and education tackling with local and global water challenges requires thorough understanding of complex systems: it has a lot to offer in the field of national and international water research.

Tohtorinkoulutuksen ja vesialan tutkimuksen kehittäminen
Yksi Aalto-yliopiston tavoitteista on kouluttaa tohtoreita, joilla on tietotaitoa työllistyä yhtä lailla akatemian sisällä kuin sen ulkopuolella teollisuudessakin. Onnistuneessa tohtorinkoulutuksessa yhdistyvät sekä tohtorikoulutettavan työpanos että korkealaatuinen, pitkäjänteinen ja systemaattinen ohjaus. Useat tohtorikoulutettavat eivät kuitenkaan valmistu määräajassa. Tutkijamme FT Maija Taka, Prof. Matti Kummu, TKT Marko Keskinen ja Prof. Olli Varis jakavat näkemyksiään tohtorinkoulutuksen ja vesialan tutkimuksen nykytilasta sekä tulevaisuudennäkymistä uusimmassa Vesitalous-lehdessä.
Vesi ja Kehitys tutkimusryhmä on jo pitkään kehittänyt uusia keinoja tohtorikoulutuksen kehittämiseksi ja tutkimuksen yhteiskunnallisen vaikuttavuuden lisäämiseksi. Tällä hetkellä kehitystyötä toteutetaan uudessa Maa- ja vesitekniikan tuki ry:n rahoittamassa projektissa. Projektin tavoitteena on tunnistaa uusia ja tehokkaita toimintamalleja, jotka ovat hyödynnettävissä myös laajemmassa toimintakentässä, kuten Aalto-yliopiston Insinööritieteiden korkeakoulun tohtorinkoulutuksessa.
Tohtorinkoulutuksen kehittämisen perusideana on väitöskirjan nostaminen laajempaan kontekstiin: koulutusprosessi nähdään henkilökohtaisena oppimiskokemuksena, josta väitöskirja itsessään muodostaa vain yhden osan. Tohtorikoulutettavaa kannustetaan kartuttamaan tietotaitoa teorian, metodien sekä työelämätaitojen osalta tiiviissä yhteistyössä muun tiedeyhteisön, maisteriopiskelijoiden ja potentiaalisten työnantajien kanssa.
Projektin toisena tavoitteena on suomalaisen vesialan tutkimuksen kehittäminen sekä sen vahvistaminen kansainvälisessä ammatillisessa ja tieteellisessä yhteisössä. Projekti pyrkii toteuttamaan korkealaatuista tutkimusta, moderneja metodeja hyödyntäen: kuusi uutta tohtorikoulutettavaa tutkii paikallisia ja globaaleja, luonnonvaroihin, ympäristöön ja niiden välisiin kytköksiin liittyviä ilmiöitä sekä ongelmia.
Seuraavan neljän vuoden aikana projektin tavoitteena on muuttaa maailmaa kestävään suuntaan kehittämällä uusia metodeja, tunnistamalla uusia kytköksiä sekä tuomalla yhteen tiedettä, suunnittelua ja päätöksentekoa. Projektissa tutkittavat aiheet edellyttävät vaativien ja monimutkaisten verkostojen ymmärtämistä: sen vuoksi projektilla on paljon annettavaa koko vesialalle.
